stunning landscapes steeped in history

A fascinating archaeological site is being preserved as part of the Dun Rioga development at the Drumree Road in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath. This is a large ringfort probably dating to between 450 and 900 AD, perhaps the residence of a branch of the ruling family of kingdom of Brega, the capital of which was at Lagore Crannog just to the east of Dunshaughlin.

Although the ringfort itself is not being excavated or disturbed in any way, archaeological investigations are being carried out in the areas around it, to discover as much as possible about this site and how it came to be here. So far, the excavations have revealed numerous smaller enclosures extending out of the main settlement. These enclosures were used as animal enclosures, gardens for specific crops, craft-working.

The enormous amount of evidence for metal-working in one of these outer enclosures suggests that the inhabitants of the ringfort were producing far more metal objects than they could have personally used themselves. This may have been an important source of wealth and status for the inhabitants, and the metal work may have been traded outside of Dunshaughlin. Artefacts uncovered include small personal objects such as iron knifes, gaming pieces, glass beads, bone combs, and crafting tools.

Just south of the ringfort, archaeologists discovered a medieval field system and early roadway which were established after the ringfort had been abandoned. The field system divided the land on the south side of the Drumree Road into acre plots or crofts, typical of Anglo-Norman agricultural settlement layout from the 12th century AD.

Several Bronze Age fulacht fiadhs were also found nearby. These are sites dating to about 3,000 years ago and are where pits of water was heated using hot stones. These features are easily recognisable from the spreads of fire-cracked stone and charcoal covering the water pits, which in this case had evidence for a wooden lining. Interpretations for the use of these sites range from cooking, beer making, textile production, leather working, bathing,
or saunas.

The preservation of this important ringfort has provided us with a wonderful insight into the lives and histories of the fascinating settlement at Dún Ríóga.
